16 year old Paige Stalker was shot and killed in Detroit on the night of December 22, 2014.
Around 9:15 pm, Paige and four friends were smoking marijuana in a silver Mercury Milan at the corner of Charlevoix and Philip in Detroit, three blocks from Detroit’s border with Grosse Pointe Park.
A vehicle pulled in front of them, and the driver got out and opened fire with an AK-47, resulting in Paige being shot in the head and chest. The shooter fled in a tan Cadillac.
The teens rushed to Beaumont Hospital on Cadieux, about 2.5 miles away, but Paige succumbed to her injuries. The other teens were wounded but survived. Investigators recovered 30 shell casings from the scene, all from the same weapon.
Police were initially told the gunman was a black male wearing Army style fatigues and body armor, though they say they’ve gotten conflicting statements about what happened.
The motivation of the shooting remains unclear, though one detective believes it might have been a case of mistaken identity.
“There was a guy out there whose life had been threatened at the wow gas station on the east side and he went looking for revenge,” retired Detroit Police Deputy Chief Steve Dolunt told WXYZ. “He was driving down the street and saw there car and thought it was the car of the individual that tried to kill him. They flipped around and lit up the car.”
Paige was in the National Honor Society at University Liggett.
