On December 20, 1991 Ida Houston was shot multiple times at her home on 5710 Winthrop near Dupont Street and Pierson Road in Flint, MI.
According to police she had returned home at 11:20 p.m. from the Northwest Bowling Alley. The suspect was last seen fleeing on foot behind the house. Police believe robbery was the motive.

Update: Ida’s Daughter & Her Former Boyfriend Charged With Murder
Ida’s daughter, Gabrielle Houston, and her former boyfriend Kareem Grant have been charged in Ida Houston’s murder. On August 3, 2017 they were arraigned in Genesee District Court on 14 criminal charges each, including first degree murder.
Gabrielle’s case (18-042698-FC) was bound over to Genesee County Circuit Court in February of 2018, and Kareem’s (18-043275-FC) was bound over in June of 2018. As of July 2019 a trial date has not yet been scheduled for either.
Prosecutors believe the murder was motivated by the potential to collect on life insurance. If convicted they both face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. They’re currently being held in the Genesee County Jail.
2018 Update
In May of 2018, 45 year old Khalifah Boyd admitted to shooting and killing Ida Houston. He is hoping to get a plea deal by testifying against Ida’s daughter Gabrielle Houston and her former boyfriend Kareem Grant for their connection in the murder.
Boyd testified that he plotted with Grant and Gabrielle Houston to carry out the killing, stating that he would get cash in exchange for the killing.

In August of 2017 Gabrielle Houston (Ida’s daughter) and Kareem Grant were charged in Ida Houston’s murder. They were arraigned on August 3, 2017 in Genesee District Court on multiple charges, including first degree premeditated murder.
