27 year old Egypt Covington was found murdered inside her home on June 23, 2017.
A friend found her dead around 7:15 pm, inside her home in the 45000 block of Hull Road in Van Buren Township. Police state that her death didn’t appear to be random, and they believe she likely knew her killer.
The Van Buren Police Department has named Kenneth Michalak, Egypt’s ex-boyfriend, as a person of interest in her death. The department doesn’t have enough evidence to call him a suspect, but has not been able to clear him.
Egypt Covington died just days before her 28th birthday. In addition to working as an account manager, Covington sang locally and won the Country Idol title held at Fraser’s Pub in Ann Arbor.
Two Men Charged With Murder
Timothy Eugene Moore & Shandon Ray Groom have been charged in Egypt’s murder.
Moore has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, and first-degree home invasion, as well as four counts of felony firearm. Groom has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, and first-degree home invasion, and three counts of felony firearm.
A third man, Shane Lamar Evans, will be undergoing a competency hearing this summer.
According to court testimony Evans was a maintenance worker at the duplex where Egypt lived. He knew Egypt’s neighbor would be out of town on the weekend she was killed, and planned to burglarize the home with his brother and cousin.
Evans claims he pointed to the empty duplex, but says Moore and Groom entered the wrong home where they found Egypt watching a movie, ultimately resulting in Egypt’s murder.
Moore and Groom are set to go to trial for Egypt’s murder in October.
